Chicken Parmesan Meatballs

Chicken Parmesan Meatballs are baked ground chicken balls mixed with panko, Parmesan, herbs and spices, browned in a skillet, then finished in marinara sauce topped with mozzarella cheese. The meatballs are tender with a seasoned crust, softened by the sauce and melted cheese, creating a comforting Italian-inspired dish.

Description

This recipe combines ground chicken with panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, grated onion, parsley, and dried Italian spices to form a flavorful meatball mixture. Eggs bind the ingredients, and seasoning is adjusted with salt and pepper. The meatballs are hand-formed into tablespoon-sized balls, browned in olive oil on the stovetop to develop a crust, then baked in marinara sauce to finish cooking.

The baking step allows the meatballs to absorb the sauce flavors while melting mozzarella cheese on top adds a creamy, gooey layer that complements the mildly seasoned chicken. The result is a moist and tender meatball with a golden exterior and cheesy topping. Fresh basil leaves are used as a garnish to add a fragrant, herbal note.

Chicken Parmesan Meatballs can be served as a main course with pasta, crusty bread, or a green salad. Their melding of Italian flavors in a convenient meatball form makes them suitable for family dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs gluten-free if needed
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoons yellow onion grated
  • 1 tablespoons flat leaf parsley chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil dried
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • salt Kosher, to taste
  • black pepper Kosher, to taste
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F. In a large bowl whisk together the panko, parmesan cheese, onion, parsley, egg, dried spices, salt and pepper. Add in the ground chicken and gently combine everything with your hands.
  2. Scoop out approximately tablespoon size amount of the meat mixture and roll them into balls. Place them on a plate.
  3. Heat a tablespoon or so of olive oil in large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. When the skillet is hot, swirl the oil to coat the bottom. Add the meatballs to the skillet and brown them for 4-5 minutes before flipping them over and browning another 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet with the meatballs and sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked through. Remove the skillet from the oven and top with chopped fresh basil and extra parmesan cheese if desired.
