Chicken Sloppy Joes Recipe

Report
Chicken Sloppy Joes use lean ground chicken cooked with diced onion and bell pepper, combined with a sauce of Worcestershire, mustard, ketchup, and hot honey. The mixture simmers to develop rich, balanced flavors and is served on toasted brioche buns with melted pepper jack cheese for a hearty sandwich experience.

Description

This recipe starts by cooking lean ground chicken with finely diced onion and red bell pepper, allowing the vegetables to soften and the meat to brown evenly. The sauce combines Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, ketchup, and hot honey, applied once the meat is mostly cooked to coat it thoroughly and add complex, tangy, sweet, and mildly spicy flavors.

The mix simmers covered on low heat to let the flavors meld and thicken the sauce, offering a saucy, well-balanced filling. The sandwiches are assembled on toasted brioche buns warmed with a slice of pepper jack cheese, which adds a mild creaminess and gentle heat.

These sloppy joes provide an alternative to traditional beef versions, leaning on the subtle taste of chicken enhanced with seasoning and vegetables. It's a filling meal good for casual dinners or gatherings.

Using chicken with 90-96% lean content ensures enough fat for thickening without greasiness. The prepared filling can be stored separately in an airtight container refrigerated for up to five days or frozen for up to three months. Toasting buns with cheese before serving adds texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lbs ground chicken 90-96% lean
  • 1 onion white or red, small
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic minced
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tbsp yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup ketchup 2 tbsp, low sugar
  • 1 ½ tbsp hot honey Mike's brand
  • ½ tsp salt
  • black pepper to taste

For serving:

  • 4 Brioche buns
  • 4 lices pepper jack cheese

Instructions

  1. First wash and dice bell pepper and onion. Smaller is better.
  2. Heat a skillet to medium-high heat. Pour olive oil (or cooking spray) into the skillet and add lean ground chicken, diced bell pepper, diced onion, and minced garlic. Allow the veggies to become translucent and meat to brown.
  3. When the meat is 90% cooked, turn the heat down to medium and add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, ketchup, and mike's hot honey. Add it all into the skillet at the same time, and then stir to evenly distribute.
  4. Ensure the meat is coated in sauce, then sprinkle on seasonings. Stir again.
  5. Turn down to low heat, and cover the skillet. Allow the sloppy joes to simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. While the meat mixture simmers, warm the buns under the broiler with a slice of cheese on them prior to serving! Scoop desired amount of Chicken Sloppy Joe mixture onto the heated bun and enjoy!

Notes

  • Choose 90-96% lean ground chicken to retain enough fat for sauce thickening while avoiding excess greasiness.
  • Store cooked filling separate from buns; it keeps up to 5 days refrigerated or 3 months frozen.
