Chile de Arbol Salsa

Chile de Arbol Salsa is a smooth, bright, and spicy sauce made by blending softened arbol chiles with plum tomatoes, garlic, and kosher salt. It emphasizes a smoky, pungent heat with a fresh tomato base, ideal for adding kick to Mexican dishes.

Description

The recipe starts by boiling dried arbol chiles to soften them, then blending with fresh plum tomatoes and garlic until completely smooth. Kosher salt seasons the salsa, enhancing the natural flavors and balancing the intense heat of the arbol chiles. The use of fresh tomatoes adds acidity and brightness to tone down the bold chili spice.

The resulting salsa has a vivid red hue and a liquid consistency, making it easy to drizzle or dip. Its heat is sharp and prominent, typical of arbol chiles, with underlying garlicky and savory notes. This salsa complements grilled meats, tacos, or can be used as a condiment to enliven simple dishes.

Adjusting the spice level by adding extra tomatoes can soften the heat if needed. The salsa stores well in the refrigerator for up to a week and can be frozen for several months, retaining its fresh flavor when thawed properly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ounce arbol chiles rinsed and stemmed
  • water as needed
  • 2 large tomato halved, plum
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium pot, add the chiles de arbol and enough water to completely cover them. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Remove the pot from the heat, cover, and let the chiles soak for 10 minutes to soften.
  3. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the softened chiles to a blender. Add ¾ cup of fresh water, the tomatoes, garlic, and salt. Blend until completely smooth.
  4. Taste and add more salt as needed.

Notes

  • The salsa is intentionally very spicy; adding extra tomatoes can reduce the heat if desired.
  • Store the salsa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week for freshness.
  • Freeze cooled salsa in freezer-safe containers for up to 6 months, thawing overnight in the fridge before use.
