Chili Cheese Dog (Oven and Air Fryer)
Description
To prepare Chili Cheese Dogs, hot dogs are cooked either in an air fryer or oven. In the air fryer method, the hot dogs are pricked to avoid bursting, cooked until heated through, then assembled in buns with chili, cheese, and jalapeno slices before a final short cook melts the cheese and crisps the buns. The oven method involves cooking the hot dogs first, then layering them in buns on a baking sheet with chili, cheese, and jalapenos, covered and baked until the cheese melts, optionally finished under the broiler for a crisp top.
The topping of warm chili and melted cheese adds richness and texture contrast to the tender hot dogs and soft buns, while jalapenos provide optional spiciness. Serving garnishes separately enables diners to customize their flavor and heat levels.
For best results, hot dogs should be pricked prior to air frying to prevent explosions, and air fryer times may require adjustment based on hot dog size and model variations. Buttering the buns before cooking can enhance flavor and crispness. Leftovers can be stored refrigerated in airtight containers for up to three days, preferably storing hot dogs, chili, and bread separately.
