Chili Cheese Dogs (Oven Baked!)
Description
The Chili Cheese Dogs recipe arranges hot dog buns in a baking dish, then fills them with hot dogs, preferred condiments, a generous amount of chili, and nacho cheese sauce. The baking process involves covering the dish and cooking at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes, which thoroughly warms the hot dogs and toppings, while allowing the bun to absorb some moisture, creating a soft, unified dish.
Condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, and diced onions can be added at the bottom of the bun before adding the hot dog. The considerable baking time allows flavors to combine and toppings to melt, while the steam inside the covered dish keeps the buns from drying. Serving with sides like grilled potatoes, potato salad, potato wedges, or chips complements the flavors and provides a complete meal experience.
For convenience, leftovers can be wrapped in foil and stored in the refrigerator. Reheating in a 350°F oven restores warmth. Variations include using Velveeta queso or Frito Pie leftovers as alternative toppings to customize the dish.
