Chili’s Awesome Blossom
Description
The recipe prepares an "Awesome Blossom" by carefully slicing a large onion into petal-like sections while keeping the root intact to hold it together. The onion is soaked in ice-cold water to induce the petals to open, creating a flower shape. It is then dredged in a seasoned flour mixture, dipped into buttermilk, and dredged again, coating it thoroughly for frying. Deep frying in vegetable oil heated to 350°F results in a golden, crisp exterior while the cooked onion inside remains tender.
The accompanying dipping sauce blends sour cream, ketchup, seasoned salt, ground red pepper, horseradish, and paprika, creating a creamy, mildly spicy condiment that complements the sweetness and texture of the fried onion petals.
This appetizer offers a fun presentation and a combination of crispy and mellow flavors, best served immediately to maintain crispness. The dipping sauce adds a bright, slightly spicy flavor contrast.

Awesome Blossom
- 1 onion large
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour

- Heat oil to 350 degrees.
- Drain the onion and dip in flour mixture and dust the onion to cover the onion thoroughly.

- Place the onion in the hot oil and fry until golden. Oil should cover onion.
- When done, drain well and place the fried onion on a plate.
- Cut the center out of the onion.
Sauce Directions
- Mix all sauce ingredients together. Serve the sauce in a small ramekin in the middle of the onion blossom.
- Garnish with paprika and just a dash of red pepper.
