Chinese Steamed Rice

Chinese Steamed Rice is a simple preparation of long-grain rice rinsed to remove excess starch and gently simmered until tender with a slightly sticky texture. The cooking method preserves the rice's natural aroma and subtle flavor, producing grains that hold together but remain distinctly separate.

Description

This recipe involves rinsing the long-grain rice several times until the water runs clear to remove surface starches that can cause undesired stickiness. The rice is then combined with fresh water in a pot and brought to a boil uncovered. It is allowed to boil until most of the surface water evaporates and individual grains become visible, which signals readiness to cover and reduce heat. The pot is then covered tightly and simmered on very low heat for about 15 minutes without fluffing or stirring to maintain the rice’s natural sticky texture typical of steamed rice.

The result is rice with a slight stickiness that makes it ideal for many Chinese dishes where rice needs to hold together well yet not become mushy. This method emphasizes careful water control and low heat simmering.

This steamed rice can accompany stir-fries, braised dishes, or be eaten simply with soy sauce and condiments. Adjusting water amount and soaking times can further adapt this recipe to different textures if needed.
