Chipotle Black Beans (Copycat)

These Chipotle Black Beans add smoky, spicy flavors to canned beans cooked with onion, garlic, and a blend of spices including chipotle chili powder and cumin. The beans are simmered until thickened to create a rich, aromatic side dish or component for Mexican-style meals.

Description

The recipe starts by sautéing chopped yellow onions in oil until translucent, then adding minced garlic briefly. Canned black beans are combined with water, bay leaf, chipotle chili powder, cumin, black pepper, oregano, and kosher salt. The mixture is brought to a boil and reduced to simmer until thickened, allowing flavors to meld and intensify.

The addition of lemon and lime juices at the end brightens the smoky, earthy beans with fresh acidity. The resulting dish has a smoky heat with herbal undertones suitable for serving alongside rice, tacos, or as a standalone side.
