Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes blend roasted or boiled sweet potatoes with a creamy mixture of half and half, butter, and smoky chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. Seasoned with maple syrup, kosher salt, and a touch of orange zest, this dish balances sweet, smoky, and citrus notes with a smooth, creamy texture, making it a flavorful side.

Description

This recipe begins by cooking sweet potatoes either roasted whole with skins on or peeled and boiled until tender. Separately, half and half, butter, chopped chipotle peppers, and adobo sauce are gently warmed together to infuse creaminess and spice. The sweet potatoes are mashed using a handheld mixer for a smooth consistency before blending with the infused cream mixture, maple syrup, kosher salt, and fresh orange zest.

The final mashed sweet potatoes offer a silky, creamy texture with a warm smoky heat from the chipotle balanced by the natural sweetness of maple syrup and a bright citrus finish from the orange zest. This combination creates a complex but approachable flavor profile.

These mashed sweet potatoes complement roasted meats or can add a smoky, sweet side to a holiday meal. A drizzle of additional maple syrup on top before serving can enhance sweetness if desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 pounds sweet potato
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 7 ounce chipotle pepper chopped, plus 1 tablespoon adobo sauce, canned
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • orange zest

Instructions

  1. First, cook the sweet potatoes one of two ways: 1) Roast on a baking sheet, whole with the skin on, in a 400°F oven for 50 minutes to 1 hour or until soft. Or, 2) Peel and quarter the sweet potatoes. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender, and cooked through.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, warm the half and half, butter, and chipotle peppers plus adobo sauce over medium low to low heat, and cook for 5 minutes or until warmed through.
  3. Transfer the potatoes to a mixing bowl, and mash with a hand-held mixer for 1 minute. Add the infused cream mixture, 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, salt, and orange zest. Mix until well-combined and creamy. Add more maple syrup and kosher salt to taste.
  4. Serve with drizzle of remaining syrup if desired.
