Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes combine tender boiled sweet potato chunks with a smoky and spicy chipotle pepper and adobo sauce mixture, finished with butter for richness. The mash offers a smooth texture with adjustable heat for a recognizable twist on classic mashed potatoes, suitable for ahead preparation and reheating.

Description

This recipe uses peeled, chopped sweet potatoes boiled until fork tender. Three tablespoons of butter are added along with finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and the sauce itself for a smoky, moderately spicy flavor. Mashing the potatoes smooth integrates these ingredients into a creamy side dish.

Seasoning with salt and black pepper balances the flavors, and additional chipotle or adobo sauce can be added to increase heat according to preference. The remaining butter is melted and drizzled on top for a glossy, rich finish.

The mashed sweet potatoes can be made ahead of time and stored refrigerated for a day or two, with the extra butter and seasoning added during reheating. Gentle warming in a crockpot or pan preserves texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4-5 sweet potato peeled and cut into 2 inch chunks, large
  • 5 tablespoons butter divided, unsalted
  • 1-2 chipotle peppers in adobo finely chopped
  • 3 teaspoons adobo sauce
  • salt kosher salt, to taste
  • black pepper kosher salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot of water. Place over medium high heat and boil until the potatoes are fork tender. Drain the water from the pot, leaving the potatoes in the pot.
  2. Add 3 tablespoons of the butter, chipotle pepper and adobo sauce to the sweet potatoes. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Add extra adobo sauce or chipotle peppers once seasoned depending on how hot you'd like the sweet potatoes. Drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter.

Notes

  • This mashed sweet potato dish can be prepared in advance and holds well when refrigerated for up to two days before reheating.
  • Reserve some butter and seasoning to add during reheating to freshen the flavors and prevent drying out.
  • Adjust the quantity of chipotle peppers and adobo sauce based on preferred spice level.
  • Reheat slowly on low heat in a crockpot or nonstick pan to maintain creaminess and avoid burning.
