Chipotle Sea Salt Recipe

This Chipotle Sea Salt recipe combines smoky chipotle peppers blended into a paste and mixed with coarse sea salt, then dried in the oven to produce a spicy, smoky seasoning. It allows you to easily add a smoky heat to dishes using a seasoned salt with balanced texture and intensity from chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.

Description

To make Chipotle Sea Salt, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce are blended to a smooth paste, then mixed with coarse sea salt until evenly combined. The mixture is spread thinly on parchment paper and baked at a low temperature to evaporate moisture and dry the salt mixture. Once cooled, any large clumps are broken apart to yield a flaky, flavored salt.

The result is a smoky, spicy salt seasoning that can be used to add complex heat and flavor to meats, vegetables, or snacks. The coarse texture of the sea salt carries the smoky chipotle flavor effectively without overpowering other flavors.

The leftover chipotle paste not used in the salt can be refrigerated for further use in other recipes. The dried chipotle salt will keep indefinitely stored in a cool, dry place.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 jar chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • ½ cup sea salt coarse

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Empty the jar of chipotle peppers into your blender and blend on high until smooth. Measure out ¼ cup of this chipotle paste then save the rest for another recipe.
  2. Mix the salt and chipotle paste in a small bowl until well combined. Spread it out evenly on a small, parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  3. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 30 minutes, or until the chipotle-covered salt is dry. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and stir the salt occasionally until it is cool.
  4. Once it is cool enough to handle, use your fingers to break apart any large chunks. The salt will keep indefinitely stored in a cool, dry place.

Notes

  • Store any leftover chipotle paste in a glass jar in the refrigerator for long-term use in other recipes.
  • The dried chipotle sea salt keeps indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place.
