Chocolate Oat Milk

Chocolate Oat Milk is a homemade plant-based milk made by blending oats with water, straining the mixture to achieve a smooth texture, then blending again with cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. The process yields a creamy, chocolate-flavored milk ideal for drinking or using in recipes that call for dairy-free chocolate milk.

Description

This recipe starts by blending old fashioned oats with water, which creates a base liquid. The mixture is strained using a nut milk bag or cheesecloth without pressing to avoid extracting excess starch, resulting in a smoother, less slimy oat milk. After straining, the oat milk returns to the blender where unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of sea salt are added and blended again to incorporate flavors and sweetness.

The result is a subtly sweet, chocolate-flavored oat milk that can be served as a drink or used similarly to dairy milk in cereals, coffee, or recipes. Adjusting sugar levels lets you control the sweetness to taste. The texture balances creaminess with a light body typical of oat milk.

The notes suggest adding nuts or seeds during blending for added creaminess. Straining twice or using fine materials can further smooth the milk. It can also be fortified by blending in supplements like vegan vitamin D or calcium. Store the milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 6 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar or to taste
  • ¼ salt sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add the oats and water to a blender and blend for 1 minute.
  2. Strain the oat milk using a nut milk bag or cheesecloth and allow it to naturally strain. This process will take a few minutes. Do not press on the cheesecloth to force the oat milk out. This will result in a smoother oat milk.
  3. Rinse the blender and pour the oat milk back in the blender. Add the cocoa, sugar, and salt. Blend for one minute. Taste and adjust the sugar levels to taste.
  4. Pour the oat milk into a pitcher or bottle with a lid and store in the fridge.

Notes

  • Add nuts or seeds when blending for a creamier oat milk texture if preferred.
  • To achieve the smoothest texture, strain the milk twice or use a very fine strainer such as a kitchen towel.
  • Fortify your homemade oat milk by blending in vegan supplements like vitamin D, calcium, or B12 as desired.
