Cinnamon-kissed labaneh and apple crackers
Description
Cinnamon-kissed labaneh and apple crackers feature a smooth, thick labaneh made by draining Greek yogurt overnight through cheesecloth, resulting in a creamy dairy spread. Cinnamon and sea salt are stirred into the labaneh to introduce gentle spice and seasoning. The labaneh is spread on simple crackers, then topped with thin slices of Cosmic Crisp apples, lending crispness and natural sweetness.
The snack is finished with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, more cinnamon, and flaky sea salt, contributing layers of flavor and mouthfeel. The combination balances creamy, spicy, salty, sweet, and crunchy elements, making for a varied and approachable bite. Preparing the labaneh requires some advance time to properly strain the yogurt but otherwise involves straightforward assembly.
This preparation suits a light appetizer, snack, or part of a cheese board. Its use of simple, fresh ingredients supports clean, fresh tastes with contrasting textures. Alternatives include gluten-free or grain-free bases by substituting appropriate crackers or even apple slices.
Ingredients
- 300 g Greek yogurt
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon ground
- extra virgin olive oil
- sea salt flaky
- 2 apple Cosmic Crisp variety
- crackers
Instructions
Make labaneh dip overnight
- Lay out two layers of cheesecloth over a strainer, and pour the yogurt into it. Tie the yogurt in the cheesecloth, creating a little sack that can be hung up. Hang cheesecloth with yogurt to dry over a sink for at least eight hours, and up to 24 hours.
Flavour labaneh dip
- Add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of salt to your freshly made homemade labaneh. Mix well to incorporate.
Dress crackers
- Smear about a teaspoon of labaneh dip on your favourite crackers. Top each cracker with two or three thin slices of apple.
- Finish off with salt, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch more cinnamon.
Notes
- Use gluten-free crackers for a gluten-free option; for grain-free, substitute apple slices as a base instead of crackers.
- For a dairy-free or vegan version, use cashew cheese in place of labaneh.
