Classic Beef Stew

Classic Beef Stew consists of chuck roast chunks browned and slow-cooked with onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, and seasonings in the oven until tender. The stew develops a rich, hearty flavor with tender meat and flavorful vegetables in a thickened broth. This comforting dish works well for filling dinners on cooler days and offers leftovers that reheat well.

Description

The Classic Beef Stew uses chuck roast cut into chunks, seasoned, and dredged in flour before browning in butter and oil to develop a deep flavor base. Aromatics including onion, garlic, and carrots are sautéed briefly in the same pot to add sweetness and aroma.

Potatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, bay leaf, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce are added to create a robust cooking liquid. The beef chunks return to the pot and the stew is cooked covered in a 325°F oven for three hours, allowing connective tissues to break down, producing tender meat and a thickened broth. The tomato paste adds richness and slight acidity balancing the savory flavors.

This stew is well-suited for serving as a warming main dish, perfect with crusty bread or over mashed potatoes. It can be stored refrigerated and reheated gently while maintaining texture. Removing the bay leaf before serving avoids any bitter notes.
