Classic Buttermilk Waffles

Classic Buttermilk Waffles combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt with buttermilk, butter, eggs, and vanilla to create waffles with a golden crust and tender interior. The batter is prepared to maintain some lumps and cooked on a preheated waffle iron to produce warm, fluffy waffles suitable for breakfast or brunch.

Description

Classic Buttermilk Waffles involve mixing dry ingredients including flour, sugar, leavening agents, and salt, with a wet mixture of buttermilk, melted butter, beaten eggs, and vanilla extract. The batter is combined carefully to avoid over-mixing while leaving some lumps for lightness. Cooking on a properly preheated waffle iron produces waffles with a crisp exterior and a soft, tender crumb inside.

Buttermilk adds a subtle tang that enhances the flavor and reacts with baking soda for leavening, ensuring the waffles rise well. The moderate sugar content contributes to browning and a slightly sweet taste. Waffles are best served warm and can be kept crisp by finishing in a low oven.

This recipe yields about four servings depending on waffle size, making it suitable for family breakfasts or brunch gatherings. The waffles can be paired with a variety of toppings such as syrup, fruit, or butter.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup butter melted
  • 2 egg lightly beaten, large
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Mix the buttermilk and the melted butter together in a large capacity measuring cup. Add in the beaten egg and vanilla extract then stir together.
  3. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture. Mix together until combined, the batter should still be a little bit lumpy but not too much! Try not to over mix.
  4. Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions, mine is a 1/3 cup per waffle.
  6. Set the cooking time to whatever you desire according to your waffle maker. These are best done to a medium brown.

Crisp in the Oven

  1. If desired, set your oven to 250 °F. Place the waffles on a baking sheet and heat for 7-8 minutes. Remove and serve!

Notes

  • Ensure the waffle iron is fully heated before cooking to achieve even browning and avoid unevenly cooked waffles.
  • The batter should remain slightly lumpy; avoid overmixing to maintain tender waffles.
  • Yield and waffle size depend on your waffle iron’s capacity; this batter serves approximately four people.
  • To keep waffles crisp after cooking, warm them in a 250°F oven on a baking sheet for 7-8 minutes before serving.
