Classic Dinner Rolls - In less than 1 hour

These Classic Dinner Rolls achieve a soft and tender crumb with a slightly golden crust, made from a simple yeast dough using bread flour, sugar, oil, and an egg. The method involves a brief rise after shaping, enabling the rolls to be ready in under an hour. They provide a versatile bread option for meals, easily complemented by butter or softened by additions like honey or herbs if desired.

Description

Classic Dinner Rolls - In less than 1 hour relies on warm water, active dry yeast, and bread flour to create a soft, smooth dough. The brief mixing and kneading happen in a stand mixer followed by dividing the dough into 12 pieces to rise briefly before baking until golden. Bread flour gives the rolls a slightly chewy, structured texture, with oil and egg contributing moisture and richness. Baking at 400°F ensures a golden crust while keeping the interior tender.

The rolls work well alongside various main dishes or as a base for sandwiches, given their neutral flavor and soft texture. Optional add-ins such as honey, cheese, herbs, or garlic powder can tailor the flavor to suit the meal or personal preferences.

For best results, the rolls are brushed with melted butter post-baking, enhancing softness and flavor. The quick rise time lets cooks have fresh rolls ready without extended proofing, making them practical for weeknight dinners or unexpected guests.

  2. Using your dough hook attachment, slowly mix in the salt, egg and flour.
  3. Knead with hook until will incorporated and dough is soft and smooth (about 2-3 minutes)
  4. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  5. Form dough into a round, cut in half, and cut each half into 6 pieces... giving you 12 pieces. Shape into 12 balls and then place in a greased 13x9 pan and allow to rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Bake in oven for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown. Brush baked rolls with melted butter if desired.

Notes

  • Using bread flour results in a chewier texture, but all-purpose flour can be substituted for a softer roll.
  • Brush rolls with melted butter right after baking to enrich their flavor and keep crust tender.
