Classic French Toast
Description
This recipe relies on soaking slices of soft brioche bread in an egg wash composed of eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. The bread absorbs the mixture, resulting in a custard-like interior when cooked. Cooking the soaked bread in butter produces a golden-brown crust that adds a slight crispness around the soft, creamy center.
The cinnamon is added in two stages to ensure an even distribution of spice. The combination of vanilla and cinnamon offers warm aromatic notes that complement the richness of the egg and milk. Serving with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and berries provides layers of sweetness and freshness, perfect for balancing the richness of the toast.
French toast is best served fresh and warm, making it a popular weekend breakfast or brunch dish. The recipe includes tips for keeping cooked French toast warm in the oven and methods for storing leftovers refrigerated or frozen. Reheating in the oven or toaster helps maintain the texture, while microwaving softens the toast.
Ingredients
- 4 egg large
- 1/2 cup milk whole
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon divided
- Pinch salt
- 8 lices brioche bread
- unsalted butter for cooking
- maple syrup powdered sugar, and berries for serving, if desired
Instructions
- If using an electric griddle, preheat the griddle to 350 degrees F.
- In a shallow pan or pie plate, add the eggs, milk, vanilla, half of the cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
- Dip each side of the bread in the egg mixture. Note-add the other half of the cinnamon after you have dipped half of your bread slices and mix again. This will make sure all of the slices get a good amount of cinnamon.
- Melt a little butter on the hot griddle or in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the French toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and berries, if desired.
Notes
- Keep cooked French toast warm on a wire rack in a 200°F oven for up to 30 minutes.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days after cooling completely.
- For freezing, freeze individual slices on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.
- Reheat frozen slices in the oven or toaster for best texture; microwave for a softer result.
