Classic Greek Salad Recipe (Horiatiki Recipe)
Description
The Classic Greek Salad Recipe (Horiatiki) highlights fresh vegetables such as ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell pepper, red onion, and kalamata olives. These are tossed with sea salt to draw out their juices, then topped with a whole block of feta cheese. The dish is finished with a sprinkle of dried oregano, capers, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, which adds richness without overpowering the fresh ingredients. This salad's texture balances crisp vegetables with creamy feta and briny olives, creating a distinctive Mediterranean experience.
This salad can be served as a refreshing side dish or light meal, pairing well with grilled meats or seafood. It's a popular accompaniment in Greek cuisine and works well for warm-weather dining due to its crisp and juicy vegetables.
To keep the salad fresh, store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator, keeping the feta separate to prevent it from softening excessively. It is best enjoyed within two to three days for optimal flavor and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe tomato
- 1/2 cucumber roughly chopped, large
- 1 bell pepper roughly chopped, small green
- 1/2 red onion roughly chopped, large
- 1/4 cup kalamata olives
- 1 teaspoon sea salt coarse
- 8 ounces feta cheese high-quality
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano dried
- 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 Tablespoon capers
Instructions
- Begin by cutting the tomato into bite-sized pieces over a large bowl to catch the dripping juice. Add in the chopped cucumber, bell pepper, onion, and olives.
- Sprinkle salt over the prepared vegetables. Use your hands to gently toss the ingredients together, occasionally squeezing to allow the tomatoes to release more juices.
- Place the whole block of Feta cheese on top of our salad. Then, sprinkle the salad with 1/2 tsp dried oregano and drizzle with 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil. Garnish with capers before serving. Enjoy your freshly made Greek salad!
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container, keeping the feta cheese separate to maintain its texture and flavour.
- The salad keeps well for two to three days refrigerated but is best served fresh for optimal taste.
