Classic Green Bean Casserole

This Classic Green Bean Casserole blends green beans with condensed cream soup, milk, soy sauce, and fried onions for a creamy, savory side dish. Baking it until bubbly and topping with additional fried onions and cheese creates a crispy, golden crust. Its combination of tender beans and creamy sauce makes it a warming addition to any meal.

Description

The Classic Green Bean Casserole begins by boiling green beans in chicken broth or water to tender-crisp state. The beans are then combined with a mixture of condensed cream mushroom soup, milk, soy or Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, half the shredded cheese, and some fried onions. This mixture is poured into a greased casserole dish and baked until hot and bubbling.

After initial baking, the casserole is stirred, topped with the remaining fried onions and cheese, and returned to the oven under the broiler to brown and crisp the topping. The result is a rich and creamy casserole with a combination of tender beans and a golden crunchy topping.

This dish serves well as a comforting side for holiday meals or everyday dinners where a creamy vegetable dish is desired. The use of mushroom soup and soy sauce adds umami depth while the fried onions provide a contrasting texture.

  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups Green bean or 3 cans drained, fresh, cut
  • 4 cups chicken broth or water
  • ½-3/4 cup cheese optional, shredded, divided
  • ⅔-1 cup fried onions French's French Fried Onions brand

Instructions

  2. Prepare a casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray, set aside.
  3. Boil green beans in chicken broth or water until they are bright green, roughly five minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl combine the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and ½ of the shredded cheese. Stir in beans and ⅓ cup fried onions. Pour mixture into the lightly greased casserole dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling. Remove from oven and set oven temperature to broil. Stir bean mixture. • Use your preferred condensed soup variety such as mushroom, celery, or chicken for slight flavor variations.
  • Fried onions add important texture; use a good brand for best crispiness on top.
