Classic Green Bean Casserole
Description
This casserole starts with condensed cream of mushroom soup mixed with whole milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder. Frozen, thawed green beans are added to the mixture along with about half the fried onions. The mixture is transferred to a greased baking dish and baked at 350°F for about 25 minutes until bubbling.
Remaining fried onions are sprinkled on top and baked an additional 5 minutes to create a crisp, golden topping. The dish has a creamy texture contrasted by crunchy onion topping.
The casserole is commonly served during holiday dinners as a comforting vegetable side dish. It can be prepared up to a few days in advance either fully assembled or just partially, then refrigerated and baked fresh before serving. Freezing is also an option with proper thawing and extra bake time.
Before baking from refrigerated or frozen states, allowing the dish to rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes and adjusting bake time helps ensure even heating and proper texture development.
Ingredients
- 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup from can
- 1/2 cup milk whole
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 4 cups green beans patted dry, frozen, thawed
- 6-9 oz fried onions divided, I use French's brand
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Grease a 2 quart baking dish and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
- Add green beans and approximately 1 cup of the fried onions. Stir, and transfer to prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 25 minutes, or until hot and bubbly. Remove from oven, top with remaining fried onions and add back to the hot oven.
- Bake another 5 minutes or so, or until the onions are golden brown.
Notes
- For make-ahead, assemble without fried onion topping, cover tightly, and refrigerate up to 3 days before baking.
- Let refrigerated casserole rest at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking to reduce baking time and ensure even cooking.
- If using frozen casserole, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking and allow it to rest before baking.
- Bake casserole until hot, adding fried onion topping for the last 5 minutes to preserve crispness.
- Freezing the casserole for up to 2 months is possible; thaw and rest before baking as usual.
