Classic Homemade Nuts and Bolts Recipe
Description
This snack mix blends Crispix, Rice Chex, plain Cheerios, pretzel sticks, and a box of cheese stick crackers tossed with a melted salted butter mixture seasoned with seasoning salt, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and paprika. The optional addition of onion powder or dried dill offers slight variations in flavor. The mixture is spread in a large roasting pan and baked at 250°F for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirred every 25 minutes to ensure even coating and drying.
Slow baking allows the butter and spices to permeate each component, resulting in a crunchy, seasoned snack mix often called "Nuts and Bolts" because pretzels fit into Cheerios like nuts fitting onto bolts. While this recipe traditionally contains no actual nuts, nuts can be added for extra texture and flavor.
This snack mix is suitable for casual entertaining or snacking, easy to prepare in large batches, and stores well once cooled. Adjust seasoning levels according to preference for garlic or spiciness. Cooling completely before storage prevents sogginess.
