Classic Moscow Mule Cocktail

The Classic Moscow Mule blends cold vodka, fresh lime juice, and spicy ginger beer over ice for a refreshing cocktail served traditionally in a copper mug. The fizzy ginger beer adds a zesty warmth balanced by the citrus and clean vodka base. Garnishes like lime slices and fresh mint enhance the bright, crisp profile, making it an easily assembled drink with a distinct flavor.

Description

The Classic Moscow Mule Cocktail combines cold vodka with fresh lime juice and spicy ginger beer poured over ice. The ingredients are layered in a copper mug or a preferred glass, optionally stirred gently to mix. The drink offers a balance of sharp citrus acidity, warmth from the ginger beer’s spice, and the smooth neutral spirit character of vodka.

The cocktail is served ice cold with nugget or crushed ice, providing a crisp, bright mouthfeel. Lime slices and mint garnish add a fresh herbal aroma and visual appeal. The ginger beer’s carbonation adds liveliness and helps moderate the vodka’s strength, making it a versatile cocktail suited for many occasions.

For larger gatherings, vodka and lime juice can be pre-mixed and chilled, with ginger beer added just before serving to preserve carbonation. Chilling the mugs enhances the refreshing experience. The recipe yields a single drink but scales as needed, maintaining the balance of ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings

Cocktail

  • 2 oz cold vodka we like to use Smirnoff or Titos (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1/2 oz lime juice fresh is best (about 1 Tbsp)
  • 4 oz cold ginger beer we like to use Fever-Tree or Reed's (about 1/2 cup)

To serve

  • ice we like to use nugget-style ice, but crushed also works well
  • lime for garnish, slices
  • mint for garnish, fresh

Instructions

  1. Fill a copper mug (or other glass) with ice.
  2. Pour in the vodka, then lime juice, then ginger beer.
  3. You can drink it as is, or give it a gentle stir.
  4. Garnish if desired, and serve ice cold.

Notes

  • This recipe scales easily by multiplying vodka and lime juice for batches, but add ginger beer fresh to maintain fizz.
  • Chilling the copper mugs enhances the cold serving experience.
  • Prepare vodka and lime juice mixture ahead, refrigerate up to 2 days, then add ginger beer before serving.
