Classic Orange Julius

Classic Orange Julius is a frothy citrus drink made by blending orange juice concentrate with lowfat milk, water, powdered sugar, and vanilla. The mixture creates a smooth, creamy beverage with a sweet orange flavor and signature frothy texture. Adding ice cubes during blending chills the drink and adjusts its thickness, accommodating personal texture preferences. This recipe can be varied by incorporating fresh or frozen strawberries to add a fruity twist.

Description

The Classic Orange Julius recipe relies on orange juice concentrate combined with dairy and water to achieve a balanced, creamy consistency. Powdered sugar and vanilla extract enhance sweetness and depth. Blending these ingredients smoothly emulsifies the mixture, while adding ice cubes further chills it and contributes to the characteristic frothy texture. The drink can be blended to retain small ice pieces for texture or blended fully smooth, depending on preference.

This beverage serves well as a refreshing, sweet treat suitable for warm weather or as a dessert drink. Its flavor is bright and sweet with a vanilla undertone that rounds the citrus notes. The use of milk softens the acidity of the orange juice concentrate, delivering a mild, creamy finish.

For a variation, adding strawberries provides a fresh berry flavor and slight tartness. This modification keeps the creamy, frothy texture while introducing a complementary fruit note, expanding its appeal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 ounces orange juice concentrate no sugar added, frozen
  • 1 cup lowfat milk or skim milk
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 10-12 ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients except the ice cubes in a blender and process until smooth and frothy.
  2. Add the ice cubes and blend until smooth (you can blend to your desired consistency - I like a few nubs of ice here and there but my kids like it ultra-smooth).

Notes

  • To vary flavor, add fresh or frozen strawberries for a strawberry-orange version.
