Description
Classic Ricotta Stuffed Shells consist of large pasta shells filled with a blend of ricotta cheese, Parmesan, mozzarella, Italian seasoning, an egg, and chopped fresh basil. The filling is creamy and herb-scented, balanced by the tangy marinara sauce in which the shells are baked.
The jumbo shells are cooked slightly under al dente to prevent overcooking during baking. They are filled individually and arranged in a baking dish layered with marinara sauce before being topped with more sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese. The dish is baked covered and then uncovered for a final browning of the cheese topping, resulting in a bubbling, lightly golden crust.
This casserole serves well as a comforting entree and pairs naturally with a green salad or crusty bread. The combination of cheeses and herbs in the filling offers a rich flavor and creamy texture that complements the tomato sauce and tender pasta.
Ingredients
- 12 oz jumbo pasta shells
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
- 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup basil chopped, fresh
- 24 oz marinara sauce
Instructions
- Cook pasta shells 4 minutes short of package instructions.
- In a large bowl, combine ricotta, parmesan cheese, two cups of mozzarella, Italian seasoning, egg, and fresh basil. Stir to combine together.
- Spread 12 oz of the marinara sauce on the bottom of a baking dish (9X13 size).
- Fill each shell with the ricotta mixture and place it in the baking dish.
- Top the shells off with remaining marinara and mozzarella. Cover the dish with a lid or foil.
- Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for 10 more minutes or until cheese is a lightly golden color.
