Classic Southern Coleslaw

Classic Southern Coleslaw blends shredded cabbage mix with a creamy dressing made from mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt, and lemon juice. The salad is chilled to meld flavors, offering a cool, crisp side with a balance of tanginess and subtle sweetness. Freshly ground black pepper adds a finishing layer of flavor before serving.

Description

The Classic Southern Coleslaw uses a mix of coleslaw blend or fresh cabbage as the base for a crunchy salad. Its dressing combines mayonnaise and sour cream for creaminess, balanced with vinegar and lemon juice to introduce tanginess and brightness. Sugar offsets the acidity, while salt enhances overall flavor.

After tossing the cabbage with dressing, the coleslaw is refrigerated for at least 30 minutes to chill and allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, freshly ground black pepper can be added to taste, adding mild spice and depth.

This coleslaw is a traditional Southern side suitable for picnics, barbecues, and casual meals. The combination of creamy and tangy components complements grilled or fried dishes by adding texture contrast and flavor balance.

Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for up to three days. Although best served fresh or within a few hours to retain crispness, preparing it a couple of hours ahead is acceptable for flavor development.
