Classic Wedge Salad
Description
This salad starts with quartered wedges of crisp iceberg lettuce, providing a firm, crunchy base. The topping includes cooked bacon pieces for smoky crunch, halved cherry tomatoes for freshness and slight sweetness, chopped red onion adding sharpness, and optionally toasted pecans or walnuts for extra texture and flavor complexity.
The accompanying dressing is a creamy blend of sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, black pepper, and blue cheese. This combination yields a thick, tangy dressing rich in sharp cheese notes, which pairs well with the mild lettuce and savory toppings.
Arranged on individual plates, the salad is finished by spooning the dressing over the wedges and sprinkling all toppings atop. Additional cracked black pepper can be added to taste. The salad is versatile, and other toppings like avocado, cucumber, olives, or different cheeses can be used to vary the flavor profile.
The dressing can be prepared ahead and chilled, allowing flavors to meld. Bacon should be crisped and cooled before adding to maintain texture. Nuts can be toasted as desired before assembling the salad.
Ingredients
For the salad:
- 1 head iceberg lettuce
- 8 lices Bacon , cooked, cooled and crumbled
- 1 1/2 cups cherry tomato halved
- 1/2 cup red onion , chopped
- pecans , or walnuts, toasted (optional)
Easy Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing:
- 1 cup sour cream , light
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 3 Tablespoons buttermilk
- 3 teaspoons red wine vinegar
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or to taste, freshly ground
- 4 ounces blue cheese , reserve a few spoonfuls for garnish
Instructions
- Add all of the dressing ingredients to a medium bowl and stir well to combine. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or can be made several days in advance.
- Cut the bacon into pieces and cook the bacon in a skillet until crisp. Remove to a plate lined with paper towels.
- Cut the iceberg lettuce in half. Cut each of the halves again in half or thirds (depending on how big the ice berg lettuce head is), to create "wedges". Place wedges on individual plates.
- To serve, spoon dressing over lettuce and then sprinkle the bacon crumbles, tomatoes, onion and blue cheese crumbles on top. Season with fresh crushed black pepper, to taste.
Notes
- Prepare dressing ahead and chill to enhance flavor melding.
- Cook bacon until crisp and cool before using to preserve crunch.
- Toast nuts like pecans or walnuts for added texture and flavor.
- Optional toppings include avocado, cucumber, olives, beets, and different cheeses for variation.
- This salad can accommodate creamy parmesan or Caesar dressings instead of blue cheese.
- For more protein, serve with grilled chicken or steak on top.
