Coca Cola Ham
Description
This recipe uses a spiral-cut ham rubbed generously with brown sugar and bathed in a can of Coca-Cola. Baking the ham covered at 350°F allows it to slowly absorb the cola's sweetness and moisture. Basting every 30 minutes helps develop an even glaze. Removing the cover near the end crisps the edges and caramelizes the sugar for a golden-brown crust. The ham’s inherent saltiness balances the sugary glaze for rich, layered flavor.
An optional step thickens the pan juices into a shiny glaze with cornstarch, which can be spooned over the ham when serving. The recipe advises against using diet soda to ensure authentic sweetness and suggests selecting a high-quality ham for best results. Spiral-cut hams are convenient for even glazing but scoring a whole ham can work as well.
This ham pairs well with classic sides during holiday dinners and is suitable for slicing cold for sandwiches. The simple ingredients and easy baking process make it accessible to home cooks who want a sweet-savory centerpiece without complicated steps.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ham spiral cut
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 can Coca-Cola do not use diet
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional
- cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a large roasting pan with cooking spray and place the ham in the pan.
- Rub the brown sugar all over the ham, making sure to get it in between the slices.
- Pour the can of Coca Cola over the ham.
- Cover the ham and bake for 90 minutes, basting every 30 minutes.
- Uncover and bake for 30 minutes more or until until ham is browned and caramelized.
- Remove the ham from the pan and place on a serving platter. Spoon the glaze from the bottom of the pan over the ham. See optional step below if you prefer a thicker glaze (I recommend taking the extra 5 minutes to do this!)
- To thicken the glaze: pour the ham glaze from the bottom of the roasting pan into a small pot and bring to a simmer. Whisk together the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the pot, whisking constantly. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute or until glaze is thickened.
Notes
- Choose the best quality ham available because the recipe’s simplicity highlights each ingredient's flavor.
- A spiral-cut ham works best for even flavor absorption, but you can score a whole bone-in ham in a crosshatch pattern if needed.
- Do not use diet Coca-Cola; regular Coke or versions made with real sugar yield the best taste.
