Description
This hot chocolate starts by gently heating milk with whole spices including star anise and cinnamon to allow thorough infusion without boiling, preserving delicate flavors. Ground cardamom, nutmeg, and a pinch of sea salt add depth and balance. After the milk is infused, brown sugar, pure vanilla extract, and finely chopped dark chocolate are whisked in until fully melted and combined. The mixture is simmered briefly to meld flavors and ensure a smooth texture.
The beverages' warm spices create a sophisticated flavor profile different from typical sweet hot chocolate, making it suited for cozy moments during colder weather. Optional additions such as orange rind bring brightness, while chili powder offers subtle heat, allowing customization according to preference.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk whole
- 2 star anise whole
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom freshly ground
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg freshly ground
- 1/8 teaspoon salt sea salt
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
- 5 ounces dark chocolate , finely chopped
- orange rind optional; if using add it in the beginning with the whole milk, strip
- red chili powder optional for a little kick, pinch
Instructions
- Pour the milk in a small saucepan and add the star anise, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Slowly heat the milk until it is very hot and steaming but not boiling (should take at least 5 minutes to give the spices time to infuse the milk). Add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, and dark chocolate and whisk until melted. Bring the mixture to a low simmer and simmer for another 5 minutes, whisking constantly to prevent scorching. Pour into mugs and if desired serve with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cocoa powder and ground cinnamon.
