Copycat Freddy's Steakburger
Description
This recipe uses 80/20 ground beef divided into small balls that are flattened into thin patties by pressing down on a hot griddle or cast iron pan. The seasoning mix—composed of salt, sugar, paprika, black pepper, turmeric, onion powder, and garlic salt—is applied to each patty before cooking. Cooking takes place over medium-high heat at around 400°F to achieve a browned sear on the thin patties.
Once cooked, American cheese slices are melted onto half the patties and then topped with the remaining patties, forming double-layered burgers. These are assembled on hamburger buns topped with raw sliced onions, pickle slices, and mustard. The method creates patties with a thin, seared crust and a juicy interior, combining classic burger flavors and textures with straightforward seasoning and toppings.
Leftover patties can be refrigerated for up to five days in an airtight container but are recommended to be enjoyed fresh for best texture and flavor. This style of burger captures the distinct pressed patty method reminiscent of Freddy's Steakburgers.
Ingredients
For the Burger:
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 4 lices American cheese
- 8 Hamburger Bun
- 1 white onion sliced
- 20 pickle slices
- mustard
For the Seasoning:
- 2 tbsp salt
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1.5 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic salt
Instructions
- Roll the beef into 8 even balls that are approximately 2 oz each. Mix together the seasoning ingredients together in a small bowl.
- Preheat a griddle or large cast iron pan over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
- Place the beef on the griddle or pan and then press them down with either a large spatula or burger press until the patties are very flat. Season each patty with the seasoning mixture.
- Cook the patties for 1-2 minutes until the patties are brown. Then flip the patties and cook for 1 more minute. Continue this process until all the patties are cooked. Then place a piece of cheese on half of the patties and wait 20-30 seconds for the cheese to melt.
- Place a patty without cheese on top of each patty with a piece of cheese. Remove and place them directly on the hamburger buns.
- Top each burger with the sliced onions, pickles and mustard. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for a good balance of fat and flavor.
- The burgers are best eaten fresh but can be stored refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Press the patties thin and cook on a hot griddle to achieve the seared crust characteristic of Freddy's Steakburgers.
