Cornbread Dressing Recipe

Made with homemade cornbread, stuffing cubes, and savory herbs this Cornbread Dressing is a Southern classic that belongs on every holiday table. It will quickly become one of your favorite easy holiday side dishes as it requires minimal prep (and hardly any dirty dishes).

Ingredients

Servings

Cornbread

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 lsrge egg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter 1 stick, softened

Stuffing

  • 1 bag stuffing cubes 12 oz, dry
  • ½ cup butter unsalted, 1 stick
  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • 1 cup celery 3-4 stalks, chopped
  • 2 large egg
  • 2 ½ - 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon parsley dried
  • 2 teaspoons sage dried
  • 1 teaspoon thyme dried
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Cornbread

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
  2. Coat a square 8x8 baking pan with cooking spray
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt
  4. Add milk, eggs and butter
  5. Beat until smooth
  6. Pour into prepared pan
  7. Bake for 20-30 or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean

Preparing Cornbread

  1. Prepare cornbread 1-2 days ahead
  2. Be sure cornbread is dry, if not, cut into 1 inch cubes and spread on baking sheet
  3. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F
  4. Dry cornbread in oven for 30-45 minutes, toss every 10-12 minutes

Stuffing

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Coat 13x9 baking dish with cooking spray
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat
  4. Add chopped onions and celery and cook until soft
  5. Remove from heat
  6. Add seasonings and mix well
  7. Add cornbread and stuffing cubes to very large bowl
  8. Add onion mixture and mix well
  9. Lightly beat eggs and add to cornbread mixture, mix well
  10. Gradually add broth to cornbread mixture and stir with each addition ** see notes
  11. Spread stuffing into prepared baking dish
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown
  13. Remove from oven and serve immediately
