Cottage Potatoes

Cottage Potatoes combine diced cooked russet potatoes with cheddar cheese, bread crumbs, and a creamy milk and butter mixture, topped with crushed corn flakes for a crunchy finish. This casserole bakes until golden and bubbly, creating a comforting side dish with a balance of creamy and crispy textures. It offers a practical way to use cooked potatoes, enriched with cheese and a mild onion flavor, suitable as a hearty accompaniment to main meals.

Description

The Cottage Potatoes recipe features diced cooked russet potatoes mixed with shredded cheddar cheese, onion salt, and bread crumbs. The mixture is placed in a casserole dish and then topped with a blend of milk, melted butter, salt, and pepper before being covered with crushed corn flakes. Baking at 400 degrees for 30 minutes results in a dish that is creamy on the inside from the cheese and milk, while the corn flakes create a distinctive crunchy topping. This textural contrast makes it appealing for those who enjoy casseroles with both softness and crispiness.

The seasoning with onion salt and pepper adds subtle savory notes complementing the mild flavor of potatoes and cheese. The use of corn flakes as a topping is an accessible alternative to traditional breadcrumbs, offering a slightly different texture and flavor profile. This dish serves well as a side alongside meats or as part of a comforting dinner plate.
