Cowboy Beans

Cowboy Beans combine flavorful ground beef, crispy bacon, and baked beans with a sweet and tangy blend of brown sugar and yellow mustard. The dish offers a hearty, savory texture with a balance of savory meats and sweet beans, making it a satisfying side or main dish. This recipe uses a straightforward skillet method, allowing the flavors to meld while keeping preparation manageable.

Description

The Cowboy Beans recipe features a mixture of cooked ground beef and chewy-crisp bacon combined with a can of baked beans. The addition of yellow mustard and brown sugar adds both tanginess and sweetness, complementing the meaty flavors. Black pepper enhances the savory depth. Cooking begins with frying bacon, then browning beef and onions in the same skillet to retain flavor. The ingredients are combined and heated through, creating a warm, comforting dish with a mix of textures from tender beans and meaty bits.

Served hot, cowboy beans make a satisfying accompaniment to grilled meats or can be enjoyed as a standalone meal. The balance of savory and sweet elements suits casual family dinners or outdoor cookouts.

The recipe originated from Angela Johnson's family, ensuring a tried-and-true flavor profile. Using lean ground beef helps reduce excess fat. Browning the onion alongside the beef softens it and incorporates its sweetness evenly. Make sure to drain excess fat after cooking meats to keep the dish from becoming greasy.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pounds Bacon
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 yellow onion chopped, medium
  • 1 can 28-oz. Bush's Baked Beans "Original" recipe
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard prepared
  • ¼ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper ground

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat, fry bacon until chewy-crisp. Remove from skillet to paper towel-lined plate to cool. Drain fat from skillet.
  2. Return same skillet to medium to medium-high heat and add ground beef and onion. Cook until beef is browned and onion is tender. Drain fat.
  3. Roughly chop the cooled bacon and add to skillet with beef and onion. Then add beans, yellow mustard, brown sugar, and black pepper. Fold to combine. Heat until warmed throughout. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Drain excess fat carefully after cooking bacon and beef to avoid greasiness.
  • Roughly chop bacon once cooled to blend well without losing its texture.
  • Serve the beans hot to enjoy the full combination of flavors and textures.
