Crab Dip

Crab Dip blends fresh Dungeness crabmeat with cream cheese, mayonnaise, and a mix of spices like Old Bay seasoning and cayenne pepper for a savory, creamy appetizer. The casserole is topped with shredded cheddar and baked until bubbly, resulting in a warm and rich texture. This dip serves well with sliced French bread or crackers, making it suitable for gatherings or casual snacking.

Description

Crab Dip starts with boiling live Dungeness crab to extract tender lump crabmeat. The crab is then combined with softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, and seasonings including Old Bay, ground mustard, and cayenne pepper to create a flavorful spread. The blend is placed in a baking dish, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, and baked until hot and bubbly, forming a creamy and slightly crisp surface from the cheddar. This dish leverages the sweet and delicate crab flavor enhanced by the spice mix and cheese.

The dip offers a warm, creamy texture with a balance of piquancy and seafood sweetness due to the Old Bay and cayenne. It is served immediately, ideally paired with sliced French bread or crackers that provide contrasting crunch and support for scooping the rich filling.

The recipe is adapted from McCormick and is straightforward, relying on fresh crab and simple ingredients without complicated preparation. Baking it for 30 minutes ensures the cheese melts fully and the dip develops a pleasing consistency.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb (500g) crabmeat I used two 2-lb (900g) live Dungeness crab, lump
  • 1 package cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 3 dashes cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese shredded

Instructions

  1. Boil the Dungeness crab in boiling water until cooked, about 8 minutes. Drain and let cool. Pick the crabmeat from the crab and set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C). In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, mayonnaise, Old Bay Seasoning, ground mustard, and cayenne pepper until well blended. Add the crabmeat and toss gently.
  3. Spread the mixture in a baking dish and sprinkle with Cheddar cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Serve immediately with sliced French bread or crackers.

Notes

  • Use fresh Dungeness crab for best flavor and texture in the dip.
  • Serve the dip hot right after baking to enjoy its creamy consistency.
  • French bread or sturdy crackers work well to accompany and scoop the crab dip.
