Crab Rangoon Dip

Crab Rangoon Dip combines crab meat with cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic, and green onions to create a creamy, tangy base. The dip is enriched with mozzarella and Asian-inspired seasonings like soy sauce and a hint of sugar. It’s baked until bubbly and golden on top, served warm with crispy fried wonton chips and an optional drizzle of sweet chili sauce for a balanced sweet-spicy contrast.

Description

In this Crab Rangoon Dip, the mix of crab meat with smooth cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream forms a rich and creamy foundation. Minced garlic and sliced green onions add freshness and a gentle pungency, while soy sauce introduces a salty depth balanced by a touch of sugar for subtle sweetness. Mozzarella cheese blends into the dip and also tops it during baking, creating a melty, slightly browned crust that complements the creamy interior.

The dip is baked in a moderate oven until bubbly and slightly browned, enhancing the melding of flavors and textures. Wonton wrappers, cut in half and fried to golden crispness, serve as a traditional, crunchy vehicle for scooping. The optional layering of Thai sweet chili sauce on top adds a mild sweetness with a hint of spice, elevating the flavor profile without overpowering the crab’s delicacy.

This dip fits well as an appetizer or party dish, inviting communal sharing. The wonton wrappers can be substituted with egg roll or spring roll wrappers if unavailable. Preparation allows for flexibility, making it convenient for entertaining.

Wonton wrappers should be handled carefully to maintain crispness after frying. Draining crab meat thoroughly is important to prevent excess moisture in the dip. Serving immediately after baking ensures the best texture and taste.

Ingredients

Servings

Dip Ingredients

  • 1 cup crab meat (imitation or canned lump crab meat that has been drained very well)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature (1 brick, 250 grams))
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 2 cloves garlic (finely minced)
  • 4 green onions (thinly sliced (white and green parts))
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese

Topping

  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese (shredded)
  • ½ cup Thai sweet chili sauce (optional)

Wonton Chips

  • 24 wonton wrappers cut in half, see notes
  • vegetable oil (for frying)

Garnish

  • 1 green onion (thinly sliced (white and green parts))

Instructions

Crab Rangoon Dip

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. If the cream cheese is not at room temperature, place on a microwave safe plate and heat for 10 seconds, or until slightly warmed and soft to the touch.
  3. In a medium sized bowl combine all the dip ingredients. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
  4. Transfer the dip into an oven safe baking dish (a 1 quart dish, or an 8”x8” or 9”x9” square dish, or an 8”-9” round dish can be used).
  5. Evenly distribute the reserved ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the dip.
  6. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the dip is bubbling and the mozzarella cheese has slightly browned. (Note: while the dip is baking prepare the wonton chips).
  7. Optional: pour the Thai sweet chili sauce over top of the dip and spread it out with a spoon. This is not a very spicy sauce, it is more sweet than spicy but if you prefer to omit this you can skip this step.
  8. Serve with the wonton chips (or chips of choice to dip) and garnish with the sliced green onion. Enjoy!

Wonton Chips

  1. Note: the wonton chips are optional, you can serve this dip with tortilla chips, crackers, veggie sticks, pita bread, or any chip you prefer.
  2. Slice the wonton wraps in half along the diagonal to create two triangle chips.
  3. PAN FRIED COOKING METHODIn a frying pan or skillet, add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Heat on medium high heat. Working in batches, carefully place each wonton chip into the oil and fry for about 20-25 seconds, or until golden brown, bubbly, and crispy. Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel on a plate.AIR FRYER COOKING METHODPreheat air fryer to 400°F. Working in batches depending on the size of your air fryer, coat the wonton chips on both sides with cooking spray or brush with oil. Place in a single layer (DO NOT STACK THEM) in the air fryer and cook for about 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown, bubble and crispy. Remove from the air fryer and place on a serving platter.

Notes

  • Wonton wrappers can be found refrigerated near tofu and salad dressings; egg roll or spring roll wrappers make suitable substitutes.
  • Drain crab meat thoroughly before mixing to avoid a watery dip.
  • Serve the dip warm with wonton chips for the best texture and flavor.
  • The optional sweet chili sauce adds subtle sweetness and mild spice but can be omitted if preferred.
