Crab Salad (Real Crab)

This crab salad blends fresh lump crab meat with red onion, parsley, and a dressing of mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, hot pepper sauce, salt, black pepper, and garlic granules. The salad is versatile, served immediately or chilled, and can be presented in various ways, such as stuffed into tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce wraps, or sandwiches. Salt adjustments depend on the salt brand used.

Description

Crab Salad (Real Crab) is prepared by first carefully picking through fresh lump crab meat to remove any shells. The crab meat is combined with diced red onion and chopped parsley for freshness and texture. A creamy dressing is made by mixing mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, hot pepper sauce, kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and garlic granules.

The ingredients are combined gently to maintain the lump crab texture, and the salad can be served right away or chilled. Flavor can be adjusted by tasting for salt, especially since crab meat, Dijon mustard, and hot sauce all add saltiness; the recipe notes that salt quantity depends on the salt type used, recommending Diamond Crystal brand for accuracy.

This crab salad can be served as a standalone cold dish in a bowl or used to stuff hollowed-out tomatoes or bell peppers for a fresh presentation. It also works well in lettuce wraps or on bread like almond flour bread. Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container and consumed within three days, stirring the salad again before serving to blend flavors and moisture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 ounces crab meat as fresh as possible, lump
  • 2 tablespoons red onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley chopped
  • cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt see Notes below, Diamond Crystal brand
  • teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic granules or powder

Instructions

  1. Pick through the crab meat to get rid of any shells. In a medium bowl, use a fork to mix together the crab meat, onions, and parsley.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients (mayo, mustard, hot sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder).
  3. Mix to combine. If you didn't add salt, taste to ensure that the salad is salty enough to your taste. If it's not, add salt to taste.
  4. Serve immediately, in a bowl, stuffed inside a tomato or bell pepper, in a lettuce wrap, or on bread such as this almond flour bread.

Notes

  • Use half the amount of salt if substituting Diamond Crystal kosher salt with other salt brands like Morton.
  • Salt is optional as crab meat, Dijon mustard, and hot sauce already add saltiness; taste and adjust as needed.
  • To stuff inside a tomato, hollow out a firm, large tomato by cutting off a slice and scooping out seeds and pulp carefully.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days, mixing again before serving.
