Cracker Barrel Mashed Potatoes

Cracker Barrel Mashed Potatoes are made from russet potatoes cooked until tender and mashed with margarine, milk, salt, and black pepper. The potatoes retain some texture rather than being completely smooth, yielding a comforting, lightly seasoned side dish reminiscent of classic diner-style mashed potatoes.

Description

This recipe uses peeled and cut russet potatoes boiled in salted water until fork tender, then drained and mashed with margarine, milk, salt, and pepper. The use of margarine or butter adds a creamy fat component while milk adjusts the consistency without thinning the mash excessively. Mashing by hand allows for some texture rather than pure creaminess, distinguishing this from fully whipped mashed potatoes.

The result is a hearty, smooth but textured side with a mild buttery flavor that complements a wide range of main dishes. The seasoning is straightforward with salt and black pepper, letting the natural flavor of the potatoes shine.

These mashed potatoes can be served warm alongside meats, gravies, or vegetables, fitting well in traditional comfort food meals.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/2 pounds russet potato
  • 4 tablespoons margarine butter is ok to use, if you use salted butter you may need to reduce the amount of salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes. It is not necessary to remove all of the peelings off the potatoes. Cut the potatoes into 1 inch pieces and place into a pot.
  2. Fill the pot with water, add enough to water to cover the potatoes and then add an additional 1/2 inch of water.
  3. Cook the potatoes on medium-high heat for about 7 to 10 minutes or until they are fork tender. Drain the potatoes.
  4. Place potatoes into a bowl with the other ingredients and mash the potatoes with a potato masher. You can use an electric mixer if desired, but be sure to not mix them until they are smooth, leave them with some texture.
