Cranberry Orange Sauce/Relish
Description
This sauce (or relish) combines whole cranberries with granulated sugar, fresh orange juice, and orange zest in a saucepan. Heating brings the mixture to a boil, then it's simmered until most cranberries pop and soften, thickening the sauce slightly over 15-20 minutes. This process melds the tartness of cranberries with the fruity brightness from the orange components, balanced by sugar’s sweetness. The resulting sauce has a textured yet thick consistency suitable as an accompaniment to poultry or other meats.
The sauce is cooled and stored in the refrigerator and can be served at a variety of temperatures depending on preference. It also freezes well for longer storage; thaw and gently simmer to restore texture.
This recipe is straightforward and reliable, emphasizing fresh citrus and berry flavors without additional spices or flavorings. Substitutions like using different sweeteners are possible but may slightly change the flavor profile.
Making the sauce several days in advance is recommended to allow flavors to meld and for convenient serving during holiday meals or other occasions.
Ingredients
- 12 ounces cranberries
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 orange zested and juiced
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and stir to combine.
- Bring to a boil. When you see the cranberries start to burst, reduce to a simmer. Simmer until most of the cranberries are popped and soft and sauce begins to thicken, about 15-20 minutes.
- Transfer to a storage container and allow to cool. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.
Notes
- Store leftover cranberry orange sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days or freeze for up to one month.
- To thaw frozen sauce, gently simmer on the stovetop to reduce extra water formed during freezing.
- Make the sauce up to 7 days ahead; 3 days in advance is ideal for best flavor and freshness.
- Serve the sauce hot, cold, or at room temperature based on preference.
- Granulated sugar can be substituted with cane sugar or alternative sweeteners like honey or agave syrup if desired.
