Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry Sauce is prepared by simmering cranberries with sugar, orange zest, orange juice, water, and salt until the berries soften and the sauce thickens. The result is a tangy and sweet accompaniment with bursts of cranberry and citrus flavor, commonly served chilled or at room temperature.

Description

This Cranberry Sauce blends granulated sugar, orange zest and juice, water, and a pinch of salt heated to boiling before adding cranberries. Simmering the berries until they begin to pop and the mixture thickens slightly produces a textured sauce balancing tart fruit and citrus sweetness.

The sauce's consistency and flavor develop as it cools. It can be served chilled or at room temperature alongside dishes needing a bright fruit complement, often enjoyed during holiday meals. Both fresh and frozen cranberries are suitable; if using frozen, add an extra few minutes to cooking time.

The recipe yields eight 1/4-cup servings, and leftovers should be refrigerated covered and consumed within four days to maintain freshness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest from 1 orange (see note 1)
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 12 ounces cranberries rinsed and picked over (see note 2)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring sugar, orange zest, orange juice, water, and a pinch of salt to boil. Stir occasionally to dissovle the sugar.
  2. Stir in cranberries. Simmer until slightly thickened and the berries begin to pop, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature or chill.

Notes

  • Zest the orange before juicing to efficiently use the fruit without losing zest.
  • Either fresh or frozen cranberries can be used; frozen can be added directly without thawing but requires slightly longer cooking.
  • This recipe yields approximately eight 1/4-cup servings.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated under cover for up to four days.
