Cream Cheese Danish with Fruit
Description
This recipe uses thawed puff pastry sheets cut into circles, each scored and pricked to create a raised edge. The filling combines cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla, beaten until smooth and creamy. This mixture is spread inside the smaller scored circle of each pastry round to keep the filling contained.
The edges are brushed with beaten egg and sprinkled with coarse sugar before baking at 400°F until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. After cooling, a tablespoon of pie filling or diced fresh fruit is spooned into the center of each Danish, adding a juicy, sweet accent.
These Danish pastries provide the flaky texture of puff pastry paired with the rich, soft cream cheese layer and bursts of fruit sweetness on top. They can be enjoyed as a brunch treat or a light dessert.
Leftover puff pastry scraps can be brushed with melted butter, sprinkled with seasonings and cheese, twisted into breadsticks, and baked for a flavorful snack.
Ingredients
- 2 heets puff pastry thawed, frozen
- 6 ounces cream cheese softened
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg beaten
- 1/4 cup sugar coarse
- 1/2 cup pie filling or diced fresh fruit, of choice
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Place the puff pastry sheets on a non stick surface such as parchment paper or a baking mat.
- Use a 4 inch round cookie cutter or drinking glass rim to cut 4 circles out of each sheet of pastry. See recipe notes for ideas on what to do with leftover pastry scraps!
- Using a small knife or a smaller cookie cutter, score a circle about 1/2 inch in from the edges of the pastry rounds.
- Use a fork to prick all over inside the smaller circle.
- Place the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract in the bowl of a mixer. Beat until smooth and creamy.
- Gently spread the cream cheese filling inside the smaller circle of each pastry round.
- Brush the edges of the pastries with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 17-20 minutes or until edges are golden brown.
- Cool, then spoon 1 tablespoon of pie filling into the center of each pastry. Serve.
Notes
- Save puff pastry scraps to make flavored breadsticks by brushing with butter, adding seasonings and cheese, twisting, then baking at 400°F for 8-10 minutes until golden.
- Use softened cream cheese for a smooth filling and ensure puff pastry is properly thawed before cutting and baking.
- After baking, add pie filling or fresh fruit to maintain pastry crispness and provide fresh flavor.
