Cream Cheese Wontons

Cream Cheese Wontons are crispy fried dumplings filled with a smooth mixture of cream cheese, sugar, and onion powder. The wontons are folded into a package shape, fried until golden brown, and optionally sprinkled with minced chives. They offer a creamy, lightly seasoned filling encased in a crunchy fried wrapper, perfect as an appetizer or snack served with dipping sauces.

Description

This recipe uses softened cream cheese combined with sugar and onion powder to create a mildly sweet and savory filling. Wonton wrappers are filled with a teaspoon of the mixture, and the edges are brushed with beaten egg to seal. The wrapper corners are pinched together to form a neat, sealed package that holds the filling securely during frying.

Wontons are fried in hot oil at 350°F for 3-5 minutes, turning as needed to develop an even golden crisp exterior while keeping the inside creamy. Draining on paper towels removes excess oil. Chopped chives can be sprinkled on top for a fresh herbal note. They are commonly served immediately alongside dipping sauces such as sweet and sour or Thai sweet chili sauce, adding contrasting flavors.

The finished wontons provide a combination of crunchy shell and soft cheese filling that is well-balanced by the subtle seasoning and aromas of onion powder. They are suitable as finger foods for gatherings or as a treat alongside main dishes combining convenience with flavorful impact.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 egg beaten
  • cooking oil for frying
  • 2 teaspoons chive optional, minced

Instructions

  1. Combine the cream cheese, sugar and onion powder.  Stir until well mixed.
  2. Place a wonton wrapper on a flat surface and drop a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture into the center. Brush the edges of the wonton with the egg.
  3. Bring 2 opposite corners together in the middle of the wonton and pinch. Repeat with the other 2 corners and pinch to form a package shape.
  4. Repeat with the remaining wontons and cream cheese until all are filled.
  5. Heat 4 inches of oil in a deep pan to 350 degrees F.
  6. Fry 5-6 wontons at a time, turning them as needed to make sure they brown evenly. This process should take about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Drain the cooked wontons on paper towels and repeat the frying process with remaining wontons.
  8. Sprinkle with chives and serve immediately with dipping sauce of choice.

Notes

  • Feel free to fold the wontons in any preferred shape to secure the filling.
  • Use a frying thermometer to maintain oil temperature around 350°F for even frying without burning.
  • Serve immediately with sweet and sour sauce or Thai sweet chili sauce for complementary flavors.
