Creamy Baked Double Cheese and Onion Dip (gluten-free)

This Creamy Baked Double Cheese and Onion Dip combines softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, and sweet diced Vidalia onions seasoned with black pepper, salt, and optional cayenne pepper. Baked until golden and bubbly, the dip offers a smooth, rich texture with a balance of tangy cheese and sweet onion flavors. It is gluten-free when made with appropriate ingredients and serves well as a warm appetizer with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Description

The Creamy Baked Double Cheese and Onion Dip features a mix of softened cream cheese and mayonnaise blended with grated cheese and diced Vidalia onions for a creamy and flavorful base. The dish is seasoned with black pepper, salt, and a touch of cayenne pepper to lend mild heat. Baking in an oven-safe dish until the top is golden brown and bubbly produces a rich, smooth dip with a pleasing caramelization on the surface.

The dip's texture balances creaminess with melted cheese, and the sweet onions add mild sharpness and crunch before baking, softening during the cooking process. It pairs well with a variety of dippables, including chips, crackers, and fresh crudites like carrot sticks, celery, and bell peppers, making it versatile as a party appetizer or snack.

Best served warm and fresh, the dip can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to five days and gently reheated before serving to maintain texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened (light is okay, I used TJ’s Soft Spreadable Light
  • 1 cup mayonnaise I used Best Foods Light Mayo, light is okay
  • 6 to 8 ounces cheese divided (I used 7-ounces Blarney Castle, grated
  • 1 vidalia onion peeled and diced (about 1 heaping cup, medium/large, sweet
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper or to taste, ground
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional and to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 9-inch pie dish (or 10-inch, or similar-sized oven-safe baking dish) with cooking spray; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add all ingredients (except reserve about 1/2 cup cheese to be sprinkled on top) and stir to combine.
  3. Turn mixture out into prepared dish, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula.
  4. Evenly sprinkle reserved 1/2 cup cheese over the top.
  5. Bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, or until top is golden browned, bubbly, and dip is done to your liking (I baked for 47 minutes). Allow dip to cool momentarily before serving. Read product labels to ensure all products are gluten-free if that’s a consideration for you. Serving Suggestions – chips, bread, crackers, bagel chips, pita chips, Fritos Scoops, mini toasts, carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber sticks, zucchini sticks, jicama, bell pepper wedges, mushrooms, your favorite crudites, or eat by the spoonful.

Notes

  • Store leftover dip airtight in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to preserve freshness.
  • Reheat gently in the microwave to restore warmth without breaking the dip’s creamy texture.
  • Ensure all ingredients are gluten-free if dietary restrictions require it, by checking product labels carefully.
