Creamy Cabbage and Chicken

Creamy Cabbage and Chicken features bite-sized chicken thighs sautéed with spices, then simmered with shredded cabbage and tomato paste in half-and-half until tender. The result is a savory and gently spiced one-pan dish with a creamy texture and herbaceous garnish.

Description

This recipe begins by cooking chicken thigh pieces in olive oil over high heat, developing some color. Paprika, Italian herbs, salt, and red pepper flakes season the chicken briefly before deglazing the pan with water. Tomato paste is stirred in to deepen flavor, followed by shredded cabbage which is sautéed briefly. Half-and-half is then added, and the mixture simmers covered over medium-low heat until the cabbage softens and absorbs the flavors, creating a creamy sauce that melds with the tender chicken.

The dish is garnished with fresh parsley for a bright herbal note. It can be served as a main course on its own or alongside simple sides to complement its rich texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ lbs. chicken thigh cut into bite sized pieces
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 lbs. cabbage shredded
  • ½ tbsp. paprika sweet
  • 1 tsp. italian herbs
  • 1 tsp. salt or to taste
  • ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 3 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • parsley fresh, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the paprika, Italian herbs, salt, and red pepper flakes. Stir and cook for just 1 minute. Deglaze the skillet with about ½ cup of water.
  3. Add the tomato paste, stir, and add the cabbage. Sauté the cabbage for another 5 minutes and reduce the heat to medium-low.
  4. Add the Half & Half and cover the pan with a lid, cooking for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally, until the cabbage cooks through. (Depending on the cabbage variety, it may take a bit longer to cook. If you don’t have any liquid remaining in the skillet, just add some water and cook until the cabbage is soft).
  5. Taste and adjust the salt to your liking. Garnish with fresh, chopped parsley.
