Creamy Cilantro Lime Dressing
Description
Creamy Cilantro Lime Dressing combines buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream with salsa verde, fresh lime juice, garlic powder, parsley, onion powder, dill, salt, black pepper, coarsely chopped cilantro, and green onion. After blending all these ingredients until smooth, the dressing develops a thick and creamy texture balanced by the tanginess of lime and salsa verde. The cilantro and green onion add fresh, grassy notes, while the dried herbs provide subtle complexity. The dressing’s flavor improves when refrigerated for some time, allowing the ingredients to meld.
This versatile dressing pairs well with salads, grilled vegetables, tacos, or as a dip for chips and vegetables. Its creamy consistency can be thinned with additional buttermilk or lime juice to adjust thickness to preference.
Substitutions in the creamy base such as Greek yogurt for sour cream or different ratios of the buttermilk-mayo-sour cream mixture may affect flavor and texture. Choosing a salsa verde with preferred spice level is important for desired heat and tang.
Ingredients
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ½ cup mayonnaise I use light mayo
- ½ cup sour cream
- ¼ cup salsa verde or green enchilada sauce (see note
- 1 tablespoon lime juice from about 1 medium lime, fresh
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon parsley dried
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- Pinch dill about 1/8 teaspoon, dried
- Pinch salt I use coarse, kosher salt
- Pinch black pepper I use coarsely ground black pepper
- ½ cup cilantro coarsely chopped
- 1 green onion white and green parts coarsely chopped, or small bunch of chives
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Thin with additional buttermilk, milk, or lime juice, if you want to adjust the consistency.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve (the taste gets better with time - it can be made several days in advance).
Notes
- The combination of buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream gives a balanced creamy base, but variations like all sour cream or adding Greek yogurt affect flavor and texture.
- Select salsa verde with a spice level you enjoy; popular brands like Herdez or Trader Joe’s offer mild kick that complements the dressing.
- Refrigerate the dressing to let flavors meld; it tastes better after several hours or a day.
