Creamy Lemon Chicken Recipe

Creamy Lemon Chicken features boneless, skinless chicken breasts seasoned with a blend of garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper, cooked to a golden brown and served with a smooth lemon dill sauce. The sauce, made with chicken broth, milk, and fresh dill, adds a bright and herby flavor, balanced by the richness of butter and a hint of lemon juice. This dish offers a tender, juicy chicken paired with a creamy sauce that enhances its mild flavors, suitable for serving alongside grains or vegetables.

Description

The Creamy Lemon Chicken Recipe begins with chicken breasts seasoned with a simple mix of garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cooking the chicken in olive oil over medium-high heat results in a nicely browned exterior while keeping the inside juicy. The lemon dill sauce combines chicken broth, milk, fresh lemon juice, flour, butter, and fresh dill, stirred together and reduced in the same pan to develop a velvety texture and balanced lemon-herb flavor. Pouring this sauce over the cooked chicken adds moisture and flavor without overpowering the dish. The optional addition of lemon zest or slices provides a fresh aromatic garnish.

This recipe pairs well with mild side dishes like rice, pasta, or steamed vegetables, which complement the creamy and tangy sauce without competing with it. The herbaceous dill and lemon notes brighten the flavor profile, making it suitable for a comforting yet slightly fresh main course.

To maintain the smoothness of the sauce, whisk the ingredients gently and allow the sauce to reduce slowly without rushing. Ensuring the chicken is patted dry before seasoning helps achieve an even sear. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F to confirm doneness. Serve immediately after drizzling the sauce to keep the chicken moist and avoid sogginess.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 chicken breast boneless, skinless
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 2 TB olive oil

For Lemon Dill Sauce:

  • 1 cup chicken broth regular
  • 1 cup milk whole or low-fat (not nonfat)
  • 2 TB lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 TB flour
  • 1 TB butter salted
  • 3 TB dill freshly cut, fresh
  • lemon or lemon zest, optional garnish, slices

Instructions

  1. Use paper towels to thoroughly dry chicken pieces, ensuring all excess moisture is removed. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper to form seasoning mixture. Evenly sprinkle seasoning over both sides of each chicken breast, pressing in to adhere mixture.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. When oil is hot, add chicken, taking care not to overcrowd. Cover skillet, leaving about a quarter of pan uncovered, to allow steam to escape.
  4. Cook until chicken is browned on both sides and center is no longer pink, no more than 165F internal temp for thickest center portions - about 3-4 min per side, depending on thickness and starting temp of chicken. Transfer cooked chicken to separate plate and keep warm.
  5. In a bowl, gently whisk together the lemon dill sauce ingredients until well incorporated. Pour sauce into the now-empty skillet and constantly stir over medium-high heat, uncovered, until reduced by half, about 5 min. You should end up with about 1 cup of sauce.
  6. Pour sauce over chicken and serve with garnish, if desired.

Notes

  • Always pat chicken breasts dry before seasoning to promote even browning and better adherence of spices.
  • Mix the seasoning blend thoroughly to ensure even flavor distribution on the chicken.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan when cooking to allow proper browning and prevent steaming.
  • Check internal chicken temperature to confirm it reaches 165°F for safe consumption.
  • Whisk sauce ingredients gently and reduce over medium-high heat to achieve a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Pour the lemon dill sauce onto the chicken right before serving to keep it moist and flavorful.
  • Garnish with lemon zest or slices to enhance both appearance and lemon flavor.
