Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter 113 g, unsalted
  • 1 cup brown sugar 213 g
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 Italian bread about 1 lb, or French bread
  • 8 egg large
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • maple syrup optional
  • Whipped Cream optional

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add the brown sugar and corn syrup and stir until the sugar is melted.  Pour into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into slices or into 1-inch cubes. Place in the baking dish over the brown sugar mixture in an even layer.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half, vanilla and salt. Pour over the bread.  Press the bread down into the mixture if needed to make sure all of the bread is soaked with the liquid.  Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Remove the dish from the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
  6. Bake covered for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 15-25 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
  7. Serve topped with maple syrup, berries, or whipped cream, if desired.
