Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings are prepared by coating dry wings with a mixture of aluminum-free baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika, then refrigerating uncovered overnight to dry for extra crispiness. The wings cook in the air fryer at a moderate temperature, then finish at a higher temperature to develop a browned, crisp skin. Multiple sauce options are provided for tossing cooked wings, offering diverse flavor profiles from honey garlic to buffalo, BBQ, lemon pepper, and Asian-inspired sauces.

Description

This recipe starts by drying chicken wings thoroughly before tossing them with a powdery mixture containing baking powder—an ingredient that promotes crisp skin without frying. Refrigerating the seasoned wings uncovered helps remove moisture. The wings air fry at 375°F initially, flip, and finish with a short blast at higher heat to crisp evenly and color nicely.

After cooking, the wings serve as a base for various sauces made from combinations of honey, garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, spices, butter, and more. The recipe outlines preparations for several distinct sauces including honey garlic, lemon pepper, spicy buffalo, BBQ, and Asian-style ginger-soy glaze, providing flexible flavor choices depending on preference.

These wings offer a crispy exterior and moist interior with the convenience of air fryer cooking. Sauce options allow tailoring to occasions or desired tastes, making the recipe versatile from casual snacks to party foods.

The recipe notes also include instructions for brining wings before drying and cooking, which can improve juiciness and flavor. The variety of sauces allows experimentation and adapting to different flavor profiles without changing the basic wing preparation.

Ingredients

Servings

Crispy Chicken Wings

  • 2-3 pounds chicken wings
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder aluminum-free
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

Basic Crispy Chicken Wings

  1. Place a wire rack onto a baking sheet. Use paper towels to pat 2-3 pounds chicken wings as dry as possible and place into a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon paprika (and any additional flavor additions you'd like to use). Sprinkle over chicken wings and toss until wings are evenly coated.
  3. Place wings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate uncovered overnight, 12 to 24 hours.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Take wings from refrigerator and carefully place the individual wings in the air fryer making sure that there is space between them, lightly spritz with oil and cook them for 12 minutes then flip and cook for 12 more minutes.
  5. To give them that extra crispy exterior, increase the temp to 390-400 degrees Fahrenheit and finish off cooking these for another 5-6 minutes until crispy and brown and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooking time will vary based on the size of your chicken wings.
  6. Serve with desired sauces and variations.

Notes

  • For extra crispy skin, pat wings very dry and refrigerate uncovered with baking powder mixture for 12 to 24 hours before air frying.
  • Use aluminum-free baking powder to avoid off flavors.
  • The multiple sauce options can be prepared ahead and warmed or served at room temperature when ready to toss with hot wings.
  • Brining wings in a salt and vinegar solution for 2 hours before drying can improve moisture and flavor penetration.
