Crispy Air Fryer Corn Dogs Recipe (+ VIDEO)

Crispy Air Fryer Corn Dogs are bite-sized hot dogs coated with a moist cornmeal batter and bread crumbs, cooked to a golden crisp in the air fryer. The batter combines cornmeal and buttermilk, creating a tender yet crunchy coating that browns evenly without deep frying. These mini corn dogs make a convenient snack or appetizer with a satisfying crunch.

Description

The recipe starts by mixing a cornmeal-based batter with flour, baking powder and soda, sugar, salt, buttermilk, and eggs. Hot dogs are cut in half, skewered, rolled first in flour, then dipped in the batter, and finally coated with breadcrumbs. This layering creates a thick, crispy outer coating after air frying.

The air frying at 375°F cooks the corn dogs quickly, crisping the breadcrumb exterior while keeping the hot dog juicy inside. The texture contrasts between the crunchy crust and tender hot dog, making them a handheld treat.

These mini corn dogs can be served individually as snacks or party finger foods. Despite the use of an air fryer, the breadcrumb coating yields a distinct crunch similar to fried versions but with less oil. Adjustments like using whole hot dogs or flipping midway help ensure even cooking and desired size.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 hotdog you can use beef hot dogs or turkey hot dogs
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal yellow
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (plus for more rolling)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 egg
  • 1 ½ cups bread crumbs
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs.
  3. Add the buttermilk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix to combine. (Make sure there are no streaks of flour in the mixture.)
  4. Transfer the batter to a tall glass. (Leave enough room to dip the hot dog without overflowing the glass.)
  5. Pour the breadcrumbs in a bowl and set aside.
  6. Cut the hot dogs (and the skewers) into halves, and skewer the mini hot dogs onto wooden sticks.
  7. Roll the hot dogs in flour to coat, and shake off the excess.
  8. Dip the floured hot dogs into the batter and then cover the battered hot dogs with breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs onto the hot dogs gently using your hands.
  9. Spray cooking spray on the hot dogs, and then place them in the basket in one layer. Make sure not to overcrowd your air fryer. Cook in batches if necessary.
  10. Set the temperature to 375ºF, and set the time to 8 minutes.
  11. After 4 minutes, take out the basket and flip the corn dogs.
  12. Return the basket to the air fryer. After 2 more minutes, check every 1 minute until heated through. Serve with ketchup and mustard if desired.

Notes

  • Use whole hot dogs instead of halves for bigger corn dogs if preferred.
  • Ensure the skewered corn dogs fit comfortably in the air fryer basket without overcrowding.
  • Re-dip any spots where the batter appears patchy to maintain an even coating.
  • Flip the corn dogs halfway through cooking for even crispness on all sides.
  • After about 6 minutes of cooking, check every minute to prevent burning and adjust timing as needed.
