Crispy Air Fryer French Fries

This recipe produces crispy air fryer French fries by soaking cut russet potatoes in cold water, then seasoning with olive oil, garlic powder, and seasoned salt before air frying. Soaking removes excess starch, helping the fries crisp up during cooking. The fries develop a satisfying golden exterior and tender interior, with garlic and seasoned salt enhancing the flavor. Air frying reduces oil use compared to deep frying and still yields a crisp texture.

Description

Crispy Air Fryer French Fries begin with russet potatoes peeled or unpeeled and cut into quarter-inch strips. Soaking them in cold water for at least 30 minutes leaches starch, improving crunch after cooking. The fries are thoroughly dried, then tossed with olive oil, garlic powder, and seasoned salt to add flavor and assist in browning. Cooking at 390°F for about 10 minutes, shaking and flipping half way, ensures even crisping and browning. Additional time may be needed based on fry thickness and specific air fryer.

The result is fries with a crisp outer edge and a soft, fluffy center. They provide a flavorful alternative to traditional fried potatoes with less mess and oil. Leftover fries can be reheated in the air fryer for a few minutes to regain crispness. This recipe works best with small batches to allow proper air circulation.

Adjust seasoning to taste and use the shaking step to prevent sticking and promote even cooking. Multiple batches can be cooked one after another to serve a larger group.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 russet potato
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt or to taste

Instructions

  1. Scrub potatoes and peel if desired. Cut into ¼" fries.
  2. Place fries in a large bowl and fill with cold water. Soak at least 30 minutes.
  3. Drain well and dab fries dry with a kitchen towel.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F.
  5. Toss potatoes with oil, garlic powder, and seasoned salt to taste.
  6. Place the potatoes in the basket and cook for 10 minutes. Shake/flip the potatoes and cook an additional 6-8 minutes or until crisp. Add additional salt to taste.

Notes

  • Thicker fries may require longer cooking, while thinner fries cook faster; monitor closely.
  • To cook more fries, prepare in smaller batches rather than crowding the air fryer basket.
  • Reheat leftover fries in a hot air fryer at 390°F for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness.
