Crispy Air Fryer Kale Chips
Description
Starting with a bunch of cleaned kale, the leaves are removed from the tough spine and torn into smaller pieces. After coating the kale with olive oil and salt, they are placed in the air fryer basket in a single layer, sometimes covered with an air fryer rack to prevent displacement during cooking.
The kale chips air fry at 350°F for approximately six minutes with a basket shake halfway through to ensure even crisping. Watching closely near the end prevents burning and maintains the desired crunch. The result is crispy, lightweight chips that retain some kale flavor with a satisfying texture.
These chips can be enjoyed as-is or with various dips. Additional seasoning options like garlic powder, black pepper, cumin, or parmesan can be added to vary the flavor profile.
Allow the chips to cool fully before storing them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. If they lose crispness, a brief reheating in the air fryer refreshes their texture.
Ingredients
- 1 bunch kale (about 1/2 lb)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
Instructions
Prep & Cut
- Wash and dry kale leaves. Spread each leaf on a cutting board. Cut the leaves from the spine. Discard the spine and roughly tear the leaves into small pieces.
Season
- Transfer kale to a bowl. Toss with olive oil and salt making sure each leaf is coated with a thin layer of oil. Transfer them to air fryer basket. You may need to cook in batches based on the size of your air fryer. You can cover the kale with an air fryer rack. This helps to avoid the kale from flying around in the air fryer.
Air Fry
- Air fry them at 350°F for about 6 minutes. Shake the basket at 4 minutes. Keep a close eye after 4 minutes.
- Kale chips are ready. Remove them in a serving plate. Enjoy as is or with a dip.
Notes
- Optional seasonings include garlic powder, black pepper, cumin, garam masala, or chili sauce for varied flavors.
- Kale chips can be topped with parmesan or nutritional yeast for cheese flavor, suitable for vegan diets when using nutritional yeast.
- They keep crisp for 4-5 days stored airtight at room temperature; reheat in air fryer briefly if they soften.
- Pair with dips such as ranch, tahini, or yogurt garlic sauce for added taste.
