Crock Pot French Toast

Report
Crock Pot French Toast is a baked French bread casserole where cubes of stale French bread are soaked in a cinnamon and vanilla egg-milk mixture overnight. A topping made of softened butter and brown sugar is crumbled over the soaked bread before slow-cooking in a crock pot until set. The result is a soft, custardy interior with a sweet, caramelized topping, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Description

This Crock Pot French Toast transforms cubed French bread into a rich breakfast casserole by soaking it in a mixture of eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. The long soaking time, ideally overnight, allows the bread to absorb the custard thoroughly, ensuring a moist and tender texture after cooking.

After soaking, the bread is transferred to a sprayed crock pot and covered with a butter and brown sugar crumble. Slow cooking on low or high heat gently bakes the mixture, forming a soft yet structured French toast with a sweet, slightly crunchy topping. Letting it rest after cooking helps it set for easier serving.

This dish serves well with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries on the side for added flavor. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for several days, making it convenient for preparation in advance or reheating as a quick breakfast option.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 French bread diced (stale bread works great, loaf
  • 6 egg large
  • 2 Cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Cut the French bread into cubes and place them in a large mixing bowl. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla extract.
  2. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and stir until the bread is coated well with the egg mixture.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (but we usually refrigerate overnight).
  4. Spray a 6 quart crock pot with a non-stick cooking spray and pour the bread mixture into the crock pot.
  5. Spread out the mixture evenly into the bottom of the crock pot. Mix together the softened butter and the brown sugar to make a crumble topping.
  6. Crumble the topping over the top of the bread mixture in the crock pot.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours until the mixture is cooked through.
  8. Let the French toast set for 20-30 minutes until it sets and then it’s ready to serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Refrigerate the soaked bread mixture for at least 4 hours or overnight for best texture.
  • Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries to enhance flavors.
  • Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
